Do you have a 5-year plan?
When my Dad passed away, my 5-year plan was – Ok, be good, stay out of trouble and get a proper education. I ended up with 2 Degrees and a post-graduate Diploma. My 2nd 5-year plan was – Ok, be good and do your best to serve out your bond. And I did. The moment I completed it, I left for my current job. NOW… I’m reaching the end of my next 5-year plan. WHAT DO I DO?
It dawned on me that come January I’ll be into my 5th year at my current job. My portfolio has changed in the last 1 year and I’ve gotten a promotion/pay increment. I like that I’m given a good amount of autonomy to develop my programmes and really explore. I like the place I work in and I have great working relationships with my colleagues. There’s no reason for me to start hunting for another job or reviewing my options when things are going great. Of course, I have days where I dread the work and just refused to get up to go into the office (about 30% of the time).
Oh no… Is this age? This is terrible. So what do I do at the end of my 5th year? Do I stay or do I go? Does my job have to be a factor in my 5-year plan? Maybe I can 5-year plan something else? Buying my own place?
