Not Your Average Woman: Lisa Marie Lip

Google Lisa Marie Lip and chances are, you’ll get links on how to do your make-up to look like Elvis Presley’s daughter. So I’m gonna cut to the chase and tell you that NO, this is not a how-to post, it’s not a tutorial on how to get your lips into that sexy pout so famous of MJ’s ex. Here are 3 things you need to know about today’s NOT YOUR AVERAGE WOMAN feature – Lisa Marie Lip:

1. She was born in Petaling Jaya in Malaysia; has lived in San Francisco, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dublin; and now made Singapore her home.

2. She rides a cool bicycle to work (in the city centre no less).

3. She is a Senior Programmes Manager at The Arts House at The Old Parliament.

Other than that, Lisa says she always loved looking good but growing up curvy in Asia gave her few choices. It wasn’t until she went to college in the US that she discovered the wide array of stylish options that she started taking it more seriously. These days, she reckons she spends about S$300 monthly on clothes, shoes, and bags.

And now for her style philosophy:

1. What is your dress/shoe size? It is anywhere from a UK 14 to 18. Shoe size is UK 7.

2. Describe Your Style Eclectic and colourful. Sometimes it’s almost like the print and colour fairies threw up on me I’ll wear just about any colour except grey and beige.

3. What do you normally wear to work or a work event/meeting? Almost always a dress and heels.

4. Where and how do you shop? In Singapore it’s where the UK brands like Dorothy P, M & S or New Look are. How do I shop? Hmmm usually alone if I want to do some serious retail therapy. I know what I like so it doesn’t take me too long to suss out how much time I want to spend in a shop. It can be 30 seconds or 30 minutes and if I’m with someone I’ll have to wait on them or I’ll feel bad if they have to wait a long time for me.

5. What are your favourite things to buy? Dresses, skirts, blouses, necklaces, earrings, rings, brooches, hats, belts, shoes, shoes, shoes

6. What are your favourite brands or shops? I love vintage clothing and not the kind that they sell at $200 in Singapore. There’s nothing I love more than a good hunt through charity shops to find an amazing dress for $20. Usually this only happens when I’m in Australia, US or UK.

7. How do you dress on your blah-days? Probably a printed T from Uniqlo and a skirt. If we were in a cooler climate it would be jeans!

8. When you were 12, what did you imagine your life would be like at your current age? Somehow I never envisioned life beyond my 20s. I thought the sequence of things would be university degree, job, marriage and kids all before 30. How different things have turned out!

We had so much fun visiting Lisa Marie’s colourful and whimsical bachelorette pad! She is definitely not your everyday, run-of-the-mill average! This woman has gone places and is not afraid to live life as she pleases! I hope you are as inspired by her as we are!

Fat-shionista #466

Hello it’s Wednesday… Sorry, I forgot I wanted to do What The Frock Wednesdays again. HAH!

Thanks to the kind people at WE LOVE COLORS, I am in love with my brand new Plus Sized Splash Color Tights! I was looking for something blue and not quite galaxy print because I’ve already got 2 pairs in the footless style. This is colour #2132. size A/B. For reference, I’m a UK16/18 and I’m 5′ 0″ (or 1.53m). The tights are a little too long and comes up to just under my boobs but this happens to me all the time because I’m Plus Petite. As with the other WE LOVE COLORS stockings, this has a very strong built-in gusset – which is very important to me as most hosiery manufacturers seem to neglect it. The crotch gusset reduces the stress caused by tugging when you pull them up, so the tights lasts longer and doesn’t rip. Who wants crotchless stockings??? At the same time, I feel that it eliminates the gross camel-toe effect.

Anyway, thank you Sian Eng again for today’s photos.

What I’m wearing today:

Top: Grey HELLO KITTY tank top from FAITH21 (former Forever 21+)

Skirt: Black weave cotton skater skirt from TOPSHOP

Outerwear: Black cropped cardigan from WAREHOUSE

Accessories: Purple necklace/earrings from JuanitaTortilla; Wood cut sleeping fox brooch from Dulcetfig; Purple stretchy belt (came free with a dress) from DOROTHY PERKINS

Leggings: Blue Plus Sized Splash Color Tights from WE LOVE COLORS

Footwear: Black square studded P. Galia loafers from STEVE MADDEN

We Love Colors clothing is a US-based online store with the largest selection of colour anywhere.  Now with over 51 to choose from – tights, leggings, fishnet pantyhose, fishnet stockings, thigh highs, and other colourful hosiery items.  Available in children’s hosiery to plus sized hosiery.

Not Your Average Woman: Siti Khalijah Zainal

Today, we travel to Jurong to visit award-winning Singaporean thespian – Siti Khalijah Zainal, also popularly known as Siti K. I recall seeing Siti K for the first time in the 2006 play “Why Did the Cat Get So Fat?” by my pal, Zizi Azah (also the younger sister of a recent Not Your Average Woman interviewee, Aida Eliza). And it was for her role in The Necessary Stage‘s Model Citizen that she won the Life! Theatre Award for Best Actress. Incidentally, The Necessary Stage was also crucial in kickstarting Siti’s acting career when she joined their Theatre For Youth Ensemble programme.

From studying building drafting at ITE Bedok, to a full-time career as a theatre actress in (what most people think is cultureless) Singapore. This woman is definitely not average by a far measure. One can only dream to be in her shoes, but most definitely though, if you wish, you can have a small bit of her by adopting part of her fashion philosophy.

  • What is your dress/shoe size? Shoe size : 9 / Dress Size : UK16

  • Describe Your Style I like the whole pin-up girls, rockabilly look. Mix that with a little bit of Hello Kitty and cupcakes, and you have me! 🙂

  • What do you normally wear to work or a work event/meeting? I’m a dresses kinda girl, so i’m alway seen in one. When i’m in a rush, i don’t want to have to think about ‘what top goes with what bottom’ etc etc, so i’ll just grab a dress. They’re so easy, breezy, and makes you feel beautiful. Like a Cover Girl. :p

  • Where and how do you shop? I like to shop on weekdays and during ‘off peak’ hours when it’s less crowded. Sometimes when rehearsals end early and i’ve time to spare before my next meeting, i’ll just window shop and i ‘accidentally’ buy things. But i mostly shop online for clothes, because there’s only a few shops in Singapore that have nice, affordable clothes for plus-sized girls like myself. And also cos I love vintage, my options are even more limited in the shops. I like Etsy because they have so many sellers selling so many pretty second-hand vintage dresses in my size, and they’re quite affordable. I can be on the website for hours, just looking at (and buying) those gorgeous dresses.

  • What are your favourite things to buy? Dresses. Shoes. Accessories like flower hairpins and brooches, headbands, bows. Cute tops and tees. 🙂

  • What are your favourite brands or shops? Shops: Dorothy Perkins & Marks & Spencer (Plus-sized girls-friendly); Forever 21 & H&M (Nice tops); Uniqlo (Comfortable basics). Flea Markets. Online: ASOS & Etsy

  • How do you dress on your blah-days? Capri pants with a tee, or a cute top. With a flower hairpin, or a hairband. And sandals. 🙂

  • When you were 12, what did you imagine your life would be like at your current age? Nope. When i was 12, never would i have thought i’d end up being an actress. I imagined myself working in an office, and wearing a lot of grey-ish and dark coloured clothings. Glad i didn’t allow that imagination to become a reality. But i also imagined i was gonna be fat though, and that part, sadly, is still a reality. :p

Siti’s not only style savvy but budget conscious as well. With well over 50 vintage-style frocks, she spends between SGD 100-200 each time. A lot of bargain-hunting done via etsy helps grows her wardrobe but prevents her pockets from emptying unnecessarily. Don’t buy entire outfits from look books! Learn the art of cobbling together your own look like the fabulous Siti!

For more of Siti’s fabulousness, catch her at Dan Tiga Dara Terbang Ke Bulan (…and Three Virgins Fly to the Moon), playing at Esplanade Theatre Studio from 9-11 May 2013. Tickets available at SISTIC

Not Your Average Woman: Nur Khairiyah Ramli

Here’s another Not Your Average Woman! I love meeting non-average women in Singapore who don’t compromise on style even though anything above a UK12 is overpriced or usually too mumsy in our size Zero Asian-physique shops. I, for example, find it difficult as a UK16/18 to buy anything in the local shops because they don’t bring in more than a few pieces of anything above UK14! If not, they’re of poor quality and, you know… make you look like you’re 50 (uhm… I’m just a few years shy of 40 by the way).

So hello, meet Khai who works at Singapore’s independent performing arts centre – The Substation! What do you think about that? Singapore – seemingly devoid of culture, still has pockets of character. Today instead of going to Khai’s house (as I normally do with my other interviewees), I have gone to visit Khai at her second home.

Read about Khai’s fashion philosophy here:

  • What is your dress/shoe size? Depending on the fit for shoes – size 7 or 8, sometimes 9 also. Heh. Dress size – UK 14

  • Describe Your Style I think my style is “lepak but presentable”. Haha. Actually I don’t have a certain style, but i know I’m very mismatch with colours. So i sometimes try all kinds of colours. But i’m most comfortable with basics , like black but then I’ll accessorize it , to not make it look too boring.

  • What do you normally wear to work or a work event/meeting? The best work wear are dresses. Loose fitting dresses, mid length dresses, dressy tops with tights, anything dressy like. Just because it’s just a one piece clothing, comfortable and no fuss.

  • Where and how do you shop? I usually shop at Haji Lane, in town, Orchard – or best online ( ASOS) especially since it’s free shipping. I like to shop alone. Because I would pick up a few stuffs to try on, and go back and forth to the dressing room. If I go with friends, you don’t get that luxury. If there’s SALES even better. I will always go to the “Sales Rack” first, because you will never know what you can find there. In shopping, there are good days and bad days 🙂 so, sale rack, check size, colour, try it on, if it fits, BUY!

  • What are your favourite things to buy? First on the list is always dresses. Dresses with sleeves. I don’t really like sleeveless dresses, as my arms are not really that ‘appealing’ . Heh. So dresses with sleeves, long sleeves, mid length sleeves, skater dresses, dressy dresses, cardigans (if i can’t resist a sleeveless dress) but right now, i’m all about necklaces. Anything bold and colorful.

  • What are your favourite brands or shops? I like new look, forever 21, Dorothy Perkins, H&M, Springfield & UNIQLO

  • How do you dress on your blah-days? Good shades, tees ,shorts and havianas. Or sometimes, i hide in my room , i don’t want to go out.

  • When you were 12, what did you imagine your life would be like at your current age? At 12, i was in primary 6. I imagined that I’ll be slimmer or taller. I was a fat kid, but nothing change. Forever in TAF Club. I remember telling myself that i have a long way to become an adult. But i will figure out my career. I will find someone who loves me. I have a whole lifetime and that time takes time. It has been 14 years, and i think the 12 year old khai would be very proud of me, today. I’m not slimmer, but i think my life, as i imagine back then, would be colorful with ups and downs, surrounded by amazing and genuine friends and family and have a full time job by then and be able to buy whatever i fancy.

So Khai has been working for The Substation for almost a year and she feels that she still has a lot to learn, experience and experiment with. At her day job, she often works with artists, musicians and bands, but she is also an aspiring playwright and director who will be debuting her first work soon.

So good luck to Khai on her debut work called “Penantian“. 3 & 4 May 2013. 8pm. $20. The Substation Theatre!

Fat-shionista #448

This dress I’m wearing today is something that my pal Tamares bought for me to wear to her wedding in England in July of 2009! I haven’t seen it since then because Tammy wanted to copy this dress and make me one. Last Saturday, I not only got the dress back but also another really gorgeous copy of this dress in a vintage floral print!!!! It’s so beautiful I don’t know if I’ll be able to wear it soon or if I should save it for a special occasion!

What I’m wearing today:

Dress: Black floral print dress with purple belt from DOROTHY PERKINS

Accessories: T-Rex necklace from MANNEQUIN PLASTIC

Footwear: Black hidden wedge pumps from ZIPIA

Thank you Shridar for taking today’s photos!

It’s a Saturday and I’m back at work. As I type this, there’s a heavy downpour outside. I’m safe and snug… Well as snug as I can at a work desk, indoors.

I’m wearing 2 items that are gifts from special men in my life – my dear old pal Ryddy bought this top during his last trip back to the UK and the hair bow is a purchase made by my boyfriend T, at the hot and noisy street markets of Bangkok.

Thanks Tamares for taking these photos! I love these dreamcatcher clouds!

What I’m wearing today:

Top: White Hi-Lo top with lipstick print from DOROTHY PERKINS

Bottom: Black tailored shorts from RIVER ISLAND

Accessories: Multi-coloured print hair print from thestreetsofbangkok

Footwear: Dracula vs Frankenstein Mary Janes from Em & Sprout on
