Oh yes, after all that riot of bright colours and clashing prints, here’s something a little more sane. I can do regular too. I probably won’t dress like your regular 36-year old office lady type person but I can do decent and sedate when I feel like it. I think this is one of my favourite outfits – am I using the term “favourite” too liberally since everything on my blog appears to be a favourite? Who cares!

And what do people say about horizontal stripes not being too flattering? HERE’S A DOUBLE WHO CARES!!! Don’t be so self-conscious okay?

What I’m wearing today:

Top: Rugby white and grey 5/8 sleeve boatneck tee from OLD NAVY

Bottom: Black full midi skirt from ASOS PETITE

Accessories: Vintage teal and gold necklace from SELECT 18 (Soho, Hong Kong); Triple flower hair barrette from FOREVER21; White owl ring from DIVA ACCESSORIES

Bag: Red leather tote from KATE SPADE

Footwear: Black strappy peeptoe heels from KIMCHI BLUE (Urban Outfitters)

IMG_5431This is a post dedicated to my dear dear pal Tammy K because she got me this dress AND the clutch. I must clarify that she got this dress tailor-made FOR ME so it’s one of a kind! For no reason other than because she’s wonderful! She copied the pattern of a DOROTHY PERKINS dress she bought FOR ME (again) to wear to her wedding in England several years ago but I’ve since lost about 10kgs so this new dress needed to be cinched in with a big belt. Such a dear friend whom I miss so so much…

What I’m wearing today:

Dress: Beige dress with neon florals (one of a kind gift from my friend Tammy)

Outerwear: Silver 3/4 sleeve mini cardigan from DELIA*S

Accessories: Mint green ombre bead layered necklace from FOREVER21; Neon pink obi bow belt from H&M; Black bow ring from ACCESSORIZE

Bag: Purple polka-dotted clutch from WISHFUL THINKING on etsy.com

Footwear: Brown heeled clogs from OLD NAVY

IMG_5426This post features a bag I love but don’t have many occasions to carry because it’s too small for my regular wallet. And doesn’t go with most of my things. I usually carry it when nothing matches and I just want to clash all kinds of colours or prints in one outfit. BUT more importantly this outfit features my spanking brand new SUPERGA sneakers that I bought for the princely *snigger* sum of USD8.99!! ROSS did it again! I checked and they usually retail for USD50 upwards! Big pats on my back!!

What I’m wearing today:

Top: Black OPPOSITION PARTY band t-shirt

Bottom: Red KEITH HARING mini skirt from FOREVER21

Accessories: Pepperoni Pizza Brooch from TWINKIE CHAN on etsy.com; Set of 7 black & bronze bangles from NEW LOOK

Bag: Green polka dotted GARDEN PARTY kiss-clasp purse from DEJA VU VINTAGE

Footwear: Turquoise classic sneakers from SUPERGA

IMG_5427I just wanted to put it out there for posterity that the other day when I was putting hearts on all the lovely things I liked (but not buying) on ModCloth, my husband gave me a hug and said with a sad face “It’s okay honey, soon we’ll have money for you to buy all the things you want”. How sweet is that? Honestly, even if we had a $500,000 bank balance, I don’t think I’ll be spending $300 on shoes. It’s fun looking at nice things though…

As of today, it’s 1 day shy of 3 weeks since I’ve been here with T. I have been enjoying every moment and savouring our time together – long-distance relationships are hard and I always forget how much I missed being together until whenever we are physically together.

When T is out at work, I try to do the household chores (make the bed, laundry, dishes, walk Max, collect mail, cook and some serious spring cleaning of closets/rooms), come online to read blogs, chat with my friends, email my family, then potter around the house doing random things. I look forward to the evenings when T gets home from work. We usually get a little time together at dinner then he goes off to work on his game. I sit and read or do more surfing of the internet while he and Max snuggle up on the couch to code. Other than visiting his family the last 2 weekends, I get to go out once or twice a week like to the supermarket or follow T to run errands. It definitely is a far cry from what I’m normally up to  but this to me (for now at least), is domestic bliss.

IMG_9355

Yesterday, he rushed home from work in the afternoon to get me so that we could go get his vision corrected. He could drive there but needed me to drive him home after surgery. I am “proud” to say that his Corvette only stalled like 10 freaking times under my driving *bleagh* I’m so terrible at driving manual transmission cars – why do they even have them anymore?!?! The clutch is there to help you change gears but they have found a better way of doing that – it’s called AUTOMATIC transmission… HELLO?

Anyway, this was what I wore yesterday:

Top: Black sleeveless KISS Hello Kitty t-shirt from FOREVER21

Outerwear: Black 3/4 sleeved babydoll cardigan from ESPRIT

Accessories: Set of 4 bangles from PRIMARK; Neon Green teardrop thread earrings from FOREVER21

Bottom: Lilac polka dotted jeans from OLD NAVY

Footwear: Sparkly purple patent leather ballet flats from STEVE MADDEN

I love the colour of my brand new OLD NAVY jeans which I got for a steal at just over USD12 with FREE SHIPPING. I’m wearing a US14 Petite and they are still kinda long (see how they bunch up at my ankles) – this happens ALL THE TIME. I’m just about 5′ tall. Anyhoos, I don’t love the fact that they are “super skinnies”. I think my legs are too chunky and my calves are HUGE – they are tighter at my calves than anywhere else. Other than that, such a cute lilac right? And my shoes were sparkling in the sunlight yesterday!

Today in evacuee-fashion. Sorry, I kid. Anyway I read on Facebook that if you don’t make at least 1 haze joke, you’re not Singaporean. I find it really strange how Indonesian forest fires (the ones deliberately caused by unscrupulous cost-saving corporations) are treated as a part of life here. I overheard some people commenting how the haze “came earlier this year”.

Seriously though last night was really bad, the skies have been a weird colour since PSI levels hit 321 (hazardous). I believe visibility is not beyond 1km. The air smells acrid and I’ve been feeling sick ever since. Lucky for me, my company issued us N95 masks from 3M. These masks are really comfortable compared to the other flat paper types I’ve worn in the past. The mask forms a cup around your mouth and nose and there is a metal strip around the nose area for you to form-fit, hence forming a tighter seal (not completely air-tight though). You can still move your lips and the mask does not press down on your nose or mouth.

Anyway, haze or not, a cardigan is good to have. This is a piece called Jersey Waterfall Cardigan sponsored by FLOW and while it’s described as Teal, even my colleagues tell me it looks green. If you’ve ever had double-headed colour pencils, this is the green directly opposite the chrome yellow. Again, I’m not sure why my iPhone is not capturing the colour that I see.

Other than that, the supposed long sleeves are not. They are more 3/4 sleeves and if you’re regular height (i.e. 1.60m upwards) you will find it a little too short. Other than that, it is as described – a generous fit. I love it. It’s so soft and comfortable! Cardigans are great for transitioning in strange weather conditions – hot outdoors, cold air-conditioning indoors. Or when travelling – too cold airplanes, too hot climates? I love cardigans for layering as it can immediately jazz up a plain boring outfit and the waterfall side panels (shorter at the back), does lend some interesting detail.

What I’m wearing today:

Top: Grey HELLO KITTY tank top from FAITH21 (former Forever21)

Outerwear: Teal Jersey Waterfall Cardigan by FLOW

Accessories: Black dangling earrings from thestreetsofTaipei; Black weave faux leather belt from thestreetsofBangkok

Bottom: Grey jeans from DOROTHY PERKINS

Footwear: Black ASHIKA SCOOPED BALLET flats from ROCKPORT

Hello it’s Wednesday… Sorry, I forgot I wanted to do What The Frock Wednesdays again. HAH!

Thanks to the kind people at WE LOVE COLORS, I am in love with my brand new Plus Sized Splash Color Tights! I was looking for something blue and not quite galaxy print because I’ve already got 2 pairs in the footless style. This is colour #2132. size A/B. For reference, I’m a UK16/18 and I’m 5′ 0″ (or 1.53m). The tights are a little too long and comes up to just under my boobs but this happens to me all the time because I’m Plus Petite. As with the other WE LOVE COLORS stockings, this has a very strong built-in gusset – which is very important to me as most hosiery manufacturers seem to neglect it. The crotch gusset reduces the stress caused by tugging when you pull them up, so the tights lasts longer and doesn’t rip. Who wants crotchless stockings??? At the same time, I feel that it eliminates the gross camel-toe effect.

Anyway, thank you Sian Eng again for today’s photos.

What I’m wearing today:

Top: Grey HELLO KITTY tank top from FAITH21 (former Forever 21+)

Skirt: Black weave cotton skater skirt from TOPSHOP

Outerwear: Black cropped cardigan from WAREHOUSE

Accessories: Purple necklace/earrings from JuanitaTortilla; Wood cut sleeping fox brooch from Dulcetfig; Purple stretchy belt (came free with a dress) from DOROTHY PERKINS

Leggings: Blue Plus Sized Splash Color Tights from WE LOVE COLORS

Footwear: Black square studded P. Galia loafers from STEVE MADDEN

Not Your Average Woman: Siti Khalijah Zainal

Today, we travel to Jurong to visit award-winning Singaporean thespian – Siti Khalijah Zainal, also popularly known as Siti K. I recall seeing Siti K for the first time in the 2006 play “Why Did the Cat Get So Fat?” by my pal, Zizi Azah (also the younger sister of a recent Not Your Average Woman interviewee, Aida Eliza). And it was for her role in The Necessary Stage‘s Model Citizen that she won the Life! Theatre Award for Best Actress. Incidentally, The Necessary Stage was also crucial in kickstarting Siti’s acting career when she joined their Theatre For Youth Ensemble programme.

From studying building drafting at ITE Bedok, to a full-time career as a theatre actress in (what most people think is cultureless) Singapore. This woman is definitely not average by a far measure. One can only dream to be in her shoes, but most definitely though, if you wish, you can have a small bit of her by adopting part of her fashion philosophy.

  • What is your dress/shoe size? Shoe size : 9 / Dress Size : UK16

  • Describe Your Style I like the whole pin-up girls, rockabilly look. Mix that with a little bit of Hello Kitty and cupcakes, and you have me! 🙂

  • What do you normally wear to work or a work event/meeting? I’m a dresses kinda girl, so i’m alway seen in one. When i’m in a rush, i don’t want to have to think about ‘what top goes with what bottom’ etc etc, so i’ll just grab a dress. They’re so easy, breezy, and makes you feel beautiful. Like a Cover Girl. :p

  • Where and how do you shop? I like to shop on weekdays and during ‘off peak’ hours when it’s less crowded. Sometimes when rehearsals end early and i’ve time to spare before my next meeting, i’ll just window shop and i ‘accidentally’ buy things. But i mostly shop online for clothes, because there’s only a few shops in Singapore that have nice, affordable clothes for plus-sized girls like myself. And also cos I love vintage, my options are even more limited in the shops. I like Etsy because they have so many sellers selling so many pretty second-hand vintage dresses in my size, and they’re quite affordable. I can be on the website for hours, just looking at (and buying) those gorgeous dresses.

  • What are your favourite things to buy? Dresses. Shoes. Accessories like flower hairpins and brooches, headbands, bows. Cute tops and tees. 🙂

  • What are your favourite brands or shops? Shops: Dorothy Perkins & Marks & Spencer (Plus-sized girls-friendly); Forever 21 & H&M (Nice tops); Uniqlo (Comfortable basics). Flea Markets. Online: ASOS & Etsy

  • How do you dress on your blah-days? Capri pants with a tee, or a cute top. With a flower hairpin, or a hairband. And sandals. 🙂

  • When you were 12, what did you imagine your life would be like at your current age? Nope. When i was 12, never would i have thought i’d end up being an actress. I imagined myself working in an office, and wearing a lot of grey-ish and dark coloured clothings. Glad i didn’t allow that imagination to become a reality. But i also imagined i was gonna be fat though, and that part, sadly, is still a reality. :p

20130503-110327.jpg

Siti’s not only style savvy but budget conscious as well. With well over 50 vintage-style frocks, she spends between SGD 100-200 each time. A lot of bargain-hunting done via etsy helps grows her wardrobe but prevents her pockets from emptying unnecessarily. Don’t buy entire outfits from look books! Learn the art of cobbling together your own look like the fabulous Siti!

Not Your Average Woman: Nur Khairiyah Ramli

Here’s another Not Your Average Woman! I love meeting non-average women in Singapore who don’t compromise on style even though anything above a UK12 is overpriced or usually too mumsy in our size Zero Asian-physique shops. I, for example, find it difficult as a UK16/18 to buy anything in the local shops because they don’t bring in more than a few pieces of anything above UK14! If not, they’re of poor quality and, you know… make you look like you’re 50 (uhm… I’m just a few years shy of 40 by the way).

So hello, meet Khai who works at Singapore’s independent performing arts centre – The Substation! What do you think about that? Singapore – seemingly devoid of culture, still has pockets of character. Today instead of going to Khai’s house (as I normally do with my other interviewees), I have gone to visit Khai at her second home.

Read about Khai’s fashion philosophy here:

  • What is your dress/shoe size? Depending on the fit for shoes – size 7 or 8, sometimes 9 also. Heh. Dress size – UK 14

  • Describe Your Style I think my style is “lepak but presentable”. Haha. Actually I don’t have a certain style, but i know I’m very mismatch with colours. So i sometimes try all kinds of colours. But i’m most comfortable with basics , like black but then I’ll accessorize it , to not make it look too boring.

  • What do you normally wear to work or a work event/meeting? The best work wear are dresses. Loose fitting dresses, mid length dresses, dressy tops with tights, anything dressy like. Just because it’s just a one piece clothing, comfortable and no fuss.

  • Where and how do you shop? I usually shop at Haji Lane, in town, Orchard – or best online ( ASOS) especially since it’s free shipping. I like to shop alone. Because I would pick up a few stuffs to try on, and go back and forth to the dressing room. If I go with friends, you don’t get that luxury. If there’s SALES even better. I will always go to the “Sales Rack” first, because you will never know what you can find there. In shopping, there are good days and bad days 🙂 so, sale rack, check size, colour, try it on, if it fits, BUY!

  • What are your favourite things to buy? First on the list is always dresses. Dresses with sleeves. I don’t really like sleeveless dresses, as my arms are not really that ‘appealing’ . Heh. So dresses with sleeves, long sleeves, mid length sleeves, skater dresses, dressy dresses, cardigans (if i can’t resist a sleeveless dress) but right now, i’m all about necklaces. Anything bold and colorful.

  • What are your favourite brands or shops? I like new look, forever 21, Dorothy Perkins, H&M, Springfield & UNIQLO

  • How do you dress on your blah-days? Good shades, tees ,shorts and havianas. Or sometimes, i hide in my room , i don’t want to go out.

  • When you were 12, what did you imagine your life would be like at your current age? At 12, i was in primary 6. I imagined that I’ll be slimmer or taller. I was a fat kid, but nothing change. Forever in TAF Club. I remember telling myself that i have a long way to become an adult. But i will figure out my career. I will find someone who loves me. I have a whole lifetime and that time takes time. It has been 14 years, and i think the 12 year old khai would be very proud of me, today. I’m not slimmer, but i think my life, as i imagine back then, would be colorful with ups and downs, surrounded by amazing and genuine friends and family and have a full time job by then and be able to buy whatever i fancy.

20130425-123249.jpg

20130425-124104.jpg

20130425-124628.jpg

So Khai has been working for The Substation for almost a year and she feels that she still has a lot to learn, experience and experiment with. At her day job, she often works with artists, musicians and bands, but she is also an aspiring playwright and director who will be debuting her first work soon.

20130425-125611.jpg

20130425-130214.jpg

20130425-130601.jpg

So good luck to Khai on her debut work called “Penantian“. 3 & 4 May 2013. 8pm. $20. The Substation Theatre!

It’s one of those days I’m not wearing a dress! I love this F21 skirt that I got yonks ago. Unfortunately the sparkly diamanté bits are all falling off. I love elastic waist bands. Any leads to something similar?

What I’m wearing today:

Top: Black/Orange star print sleeveless top from NEW LOOK

Bottom: Navy elastic waisted tulle skirt from F21

Accessories: Navy statement necklace from ISLAND SHOP

Footwear: Black hidden wedge pumps from ZIPIA

Thanks for the photos, Sian Eng! Speedy photographer got it all done in under 2 minutes!
