Yesterday was cheap pizza Wednesday and I usually go to Glazier’s to get a large Cheese pizza for $5.99 but instead, T and I skipped our routine and had Chicago-style deep-dish at Amore Taste of Chicago (just about 15 minutes drive from where we live). It was delicious and superbly filling!! I’m glad I wore something bulky and baggy… HAHHAHA!!

What I wore yesterday:

Top: Grey superheroes sweatshirt from MARVEL

Accessories: Red & Blue Power Rangers earrings from VICTORIA JOMO at Haji Lane (Singapore); Black flower barrette from ASOS

Bottom: Light blue chambray skater skirt from OLD NAVY

Leggings: Crimson opaque tights from UNIQLO (these are highly recommended! Super smooth and durable too)

Footwear: Black slouchy boots from AMAZON

So after I got dressed, I went up to T’s office (which is on the 3rd floor of our house while our bedroom is on the 1st) and showed him my outfit. I asked him what he thought of it and of course, my husband who tries to always be gentle with me didn’t say anything mean even though I could see in his eyes that he was a little bewildered. He merely said “hmmm… that’s random. Are you selling these clothes?”. HAHAHA!

Guest Post: OUT OF THE CAKE BOX (Singapore)

IMAG1919

Remember Dana for the NYAW series? When we visited her at her flat last year, she surprised us by baking a cake in the image of Chloe and by also serving us so many yummy treats. At that point, she was just still completing her baking school and was on the verge of opening her own home bakery business. We knew just from the treats we sampled and the pictures of the amazing bespoke cakes that she showed us that it will be a runaway success.

IMAG1905

Fast forward to a year later and Dana has opened a brick and mortar cake shop! We were delighted to hear the wonderful news! We were invited to the soft-opening so JM and I went to check out what’s on offer. The shop’s located in the mature housing estate of Telok Blangah. It might sound obscure but it’s not. There’s an MRT station right at their doorstep and there are many buses that will take you straight into the city within minutes.

The cake shop has a simple layout and basic interior design so you won’t find any hipster cafe pretensions here which is refreshing. The most striking thing about the interior is the beautiful 70-s mosaic floor tiles which Dana fought tooth & nail to keep. Anyway, the decor is the last thing one would notice because the star of this shop is the food – cakes and pastries!

Our Favourites

IMAG1909

Chendol Fudge Cake

Gula melaka infused sponge cake layers with coconut gula melaka fudge and classic chendol toppings. We exclaimed in excitement when we first saw a photo of this on their FB page! Chendol in a cake! Perfect! We really enjoyed this because you get the flavours of chendol and the bits of attap chee and red bean. While one would expect a cake based on chendol to be cloyingly sweet, it wasn’t.

10799831_10154769961080497_843179086_n

Chicago Cheesecake

Creamy and fluffy texture with subtle hints of citrus. This is really amazing. We’ve always found most American cheesecakes too dense and filling and the Japanese cheesecakes are too light and airy. Out of the Cakebox’s cheesecake is out of this world because they managed to get the right balance between the both. Highly recommended.

IMAG1910

Gnome Domes

This was created by Dana’s pastry chef who they affectionately call the Pastry Gnome. It’s choux pastry with creme pattiserie. We don’t know how to describe except that it’s damn shiok. Really well made choux pastry with delightful cream with local flavours like Horlicks!

Savoury Muffins

I prefer savoury to sweet things so I was so happy to see this in the shop. Roast chicken, olives, petit pois, homemade pesto cream cheese frosting! Some people might be turned off by the idea of a savoury muffin but you just have to take that leap of faith and try it. Think Out of the Cakebox! You’d be surprised.

Tart au Citron

It’s like biting into a super lemon tart. The tartness of the citrus hits you and then you taste the sweetness.

Milionaire’s Tart

Rich buttery short crust base topped off with sea-salt caramel and slow baked chocolate custard.

This is probably named Millionaire’s Tart because it’s so wonderfully rich

Everything we tasted at Out of the Cakebox was delicious and the staff were so friendly. We wish Dana and her partner, all the best and hope that their venture will continue to grow! They’ve worked so hard for this and we’re glad that Dana worked towards realising this cakery. She’s definitely not your average woman.

Do support Out of the Cakebox.

They are located at Blk 45 Telok Blangah Drive #01-173, Singapore 100045.

So this happened today. I took these pictures on my way out to the Post Office and for some silly reason, it didn’t occur to me to put down the plastic bag I was carrying. I have no idea where I got this Lakeshore bag – have never bought anything from there and I have no children. It was however holding 3 parcels that I was going to mail out.

What I’m wearing today:

Dress: Purple and black floral dress from DOROTHY PERKINS

Accessories: Brown pleather belt from STEVE MADDEN

Outerwear: Purple cropped jacket from H&M Divided

Bag: Grey rectangular kiss-clasp handbag from CHARLES & KEITH

Footwear: Dark beige moto boots from MADDEN GIRLIMG_8601

IMG_8161This is the first time I’m wearing this dress. For some strange reason though, it looks kinda blue here when it’s actually a very light mint green. I got it at Target for $7.99, down from $24.99! w000t!

What I’m wearing today:

Dress: Light mint green dress from XHILARATION (at Target)

Outerwear: Silver cropped cardigan from DELIAS

Accessories: Lilac acrylic statement necklace from TALISMAN’S (at Far East Plaza)

Footwear: Dark beige moto boots from MADDEN GIRL

Fat-shaming – The Aftermath

I believe that some of you have had the opportunity to read that dastardly episode regarding my blog being featured in Reddit’s Fat People Hate forum. I also published a long post about a week ago (had over 1.5k read it) including an open letter.

Long story short, my ultra protective friends in Singapore gathered their resources and identified the woman who started the thread insulting me. I was given more information than I needed or ever wanted – information that could easily ruin her reputation as well as her career which depended on it.

Even if I hadn’t planned on taking any action, in my post, I made several remarks that would make her identifiable to her immediate peers. As I mentioned, I’m not a vindictive woman and if I was, there could’ve been so much damage. She came forward, wrote me an apology and I took it all down – from my blog, twitter, instagram and facebook. I don’t think I want any more than that. After mulling over it for a few days, I’ve decided to publish her apology publicly:

Dear Chloe,

I am DC. I was alerted to your blog by a mutual friend regarding my post, and immediately crafted this in response. I was deservedly told off, and I wish to offer my most sincere apologies for my actions. You are absolutely correct that I am too old to be behaving so childishly, and I am glad that you are gracious enough to withhold from seeking revenge. I’m suitably embarrassed by this incident, and I reassure you that this will not happen again.

I have suffered from and battled body image issues and an eating disorder for years. I understand that this is no excuse for my behavior, but my dysmorphic point of view of my own body, along with a poor self image, has contributed to my lashing out at others for no reason. I have since then become aware of this, and I vow never to do this again.

I’m humbly asking for your graciousness and forgiveness once more in the form of a favor. Would you mind taking down all of the details that you’ve posted about me on your blog? I’m begging for a second chance. Should you come to Singapore, do give me a call or send me an email. I would feel very honored to meet with you, apologize again in person, and to have a conversation to find out more about who you are.

Please feel free to post this publicly on your blog should you feel that it is appropriate.

With sincerest apologies,(omitted for this post)

Everybody deserves a second chance, and a third or a fourth sometimes. We are human and nobody’s perfect. Anger is never the solution. Maybe it’s the teacher in me. Maybe it’s just simply because I don’t want any part of that angst and tragedy we see everywhere around us. Maybe it’s because I want to keep my blog happy and positive. Maybe because I have large network of wonderful friends who have my back and are always watching out for me, I am able to walk away so confidently.

When I replied her e-mail, I suddenly felt very teacherly – after all, this woman is the same age as my former students. I imagined her to be one of them and if something similar should happen to any of them, I would want the same response and wished that they be forgiven easily once they’ve admitted their mistakes.

Hi (omitted for this post)

I’ve removed the entire entry instead of just omitting the details. I’m heartened to receive your e-mail even though I know that there’s no guarantee that this wouldn’t happen again or that your e-mail was crafted with the help of others. I understand that it’ll take a while before people change and it’s human nature. There’s no need for me to tell you how this works, seeing that you’re a (omitted for this post)

I hope that you’ll have the support of your friends in working out your demons and regardless of the methods they will use to help you exorcise this entire episode – whether the bitching continues in private (which is what happens everywhere anyway) or they choose to reinforce the positive attributes of your personality. I hope at the end of it all, you’ll see that everything is pointless and it’s such a waste of your time and abilities to resort to becoming a keyboard warrior stereotype.

You know that I could’ve done so much more with the information provided to me but having had 2 near-death experiences, each moment I live is precious and I choose to only focus on the good so that I’m always ready to leave my corporeal self with no regrets. I have no desire to meddle elsewhere except in my own business, so I wish you well. Perhaps we would meet when I return to Singapore for a visit next year.

As for posting your email, I most likely would in my own time. Thank you again for coming forward with your apology.

My best,

Chloe

There were several e-mail exchanges that followed. She opened herself up and told me her problems, then asked if I could take down the other stuff from my other social media accounts. I obliged, told her to take care of herself and wished her well. End of story. Sometimes, life doesn’t have to be too complicated.

This pineapple-print skirt has been worn only a handful of times since I bought it. I’m thinking of doing a clear-out sale on eBay to sell some of my things – maybe about 20-25 items. I have a lot of clothes that I don’t wear as much, and are no longer suitable for my lifestyle. $5 and $10 items – clothes and accessories. Maybe. I’m not sure yet. But if I do, this pineapple skirt should go because I think someone else would use it more often than I do. Also, I could use some shopping money for winter clothes.

What I’m wearing today:

Top: Grey tank top from OLD NAVY

Outerwear: Pink 3/4 sleeve cardigan from WAREHOUSE

Accessories: Rainbow-coloured felt button necklace from MIAOW & SQUEAK; Natural bamboo weave bangle from THE ISLAND SHOP

Bag: White pleather bag with pink bow and black accents from BETSEY JOHNSON

Footwear: Black gladiator wedges from KENNETH COLE REACTION

IMG_7950So the secret to taking good selfies is a weird angle huh? I can’t see my double chin in this photo! You know, I have to say that while I like looking at those posed or curated blogs/instagram pictures, it’s a little disconcerting when the person is unrecognisable. I see that happening to a lot of wedding photos – the contouring, falsies, air-brushing and what-not. Why do you want to not look like yourself so much? Maybe a little tweaking or colour-balancing is okay but I’ve seen pictures where their entire face shape is different. I do almost no editing because I’m just lazy like that. These days, if there is an “enhance” button, I’d click it. If not, you get the actual photo – warts and all. Besides, I don’t drive to the park to look wistfully  just so I can take mood pictures with nice backgrounds.

Anyway, I have a huge head. I don’t like taking photos with the myspace-style angle (aka top angle down) if I can help it. When T does it, he always makes me look like a bobble-head doll because he’s almost an entire foot taller than I am. But when I get him to put the camera nearer his navel, the photos come out all blurry or weirder. HAHAHA!IMG_7959

What I’m wearing today:

Footwear: Black strappy heels from KIMCHI BLUE (URBAN OUTFITTERS)

IMG_7953Today’s outfit is more about the accessories than anything else. I got this necklace in the mail a few days ago from my dear dear friend Ryddy (along with chopsticks, another pin and a lovely birthday card). And because I love it so much, I’m going to wear it for the next few days – it’s kitschy but it’s so versatile with my wardrobe!
