Fatshion, Food & Frivolities – Life in Las Vegas & Singapore

Oh by the way, I got married

20131029-035341.jpgOh hey… Guess what? I got married last Saturday. In Vegas, of course. By Darth Vader, no less. These pixellated photos are courtesy of screen captures from the LIVE STREAM. We didn’t have both our mothers in attendance and I also wanted to share the occasion with my close friends back in Singapore, so we had a video broadcast of the event!

Yes! We finally did it and this means, no more long distance. Hopefully, we will never ever have to spend a night apart again (okay, not for months at a stretch, I mean).

It was a small ceremony held at Viva Las Vegas, that hopefully is indicative of our lives together henceforth – there was some planning (we both wanted something that spoke to our geek sides), some budgeting (everything including BOTH our clothes, shoes, accessories, the rental of the chapel, photographer, minister’s fee, marriage license etc was under $2000), some frivolous fun, lots of laughter and always inclusive of our friends and families no matter where they are.

It still feels surreal.

Before the actual wedding, we had to get our marriage license. Easy peasy! USD60 as well as a valid passport or photo ID that displays your full name and date of birth is all it takes. The Clark County Marriage Bureau operates 365 days a year from 8am to midnight every day and when we were there, I observed people from all over, not just US citizens. All kinds of people come here to get married in the Wedding Capital of the World, many spontaneously and some were already in their wedding clothes – straight after getting their marriage licence, they would head to a chapel (there are dozens nearby) to be married!

Less than a year ago when T said he was going to marry me, I basically laughed and said “We’ll see about that…”, and now we’re here. I think my mother loved T more than any other guy I’ve brought home, because you know… he’s just so decent and proper, and was only too happy to let me do this (with just a hint of being scandalized because I didn’t do the proper “handover” aka Chinese tea ceremony before I ran away to get married to an Ang Mo in a foreign country). But that’s that and we’re going to try get it sorted out soon so my family’s honour can be restored… *koffkoff*

So hello everyone! This is it! I’m the new Mrs T Happ!

And if you want to bless our home with a gift or two… here’s our Amazon Wedding Gift Registry or scoot over there for some stalking and see what kind of people we are. HAHA!

Premiere of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (Lido, Singapore)

So I got invites to the premiere of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS 3D at Shaw Theatres LIDO and I brought my pal, Nat Pixiedub as my date. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves (hey, it’s not incongruous even if the last movie we watched was a RomZomCom chick flick WARM BODIES) although she had to leave halfway through the movie because of a freak accident… 😦

Anyway, I am a Star Wars fan caught between the age-old Star Wars vs Star Trek battle – Star Wars wins overall by the way (see this infographic). I have Darth Vader tattooed on my back and once wrote an academic *koffkoff* paper for my undergraduate (English Literature) degree on how Darth Vader is one of the most well-developed super villans around.

A few months ago, I asked T “Star Trek or Star Wars… and why?” And of course, the love of my life didn’t disappoint me. I’ve pulled out the old email and extracted his answer here:

I’m going to have to go with Star Wars, but specifically the early Star Wars, simply because they were more badass, shooting first and asking questions later. In Star Trek they can sometimes be weenies with their Prime Directive and cultural sensitivity. However, Star Trek still kicks the new Star Wars’ butt – it was almost like George Lucas tried to create a more lame version of the Federation of Planets and failed miserably. But the even newer Star Trek series seems like it might even draw praise from Han and Chewie (driving a Stingray off a cliff to the Beastie Boys definitely helped Kirk’s street cred IMO). We’ll see when the new movie comes out. I’m also thinking the Disney-directed Star Wars films will be an improvement over the ones with Anakin and Jar Jar, and may end up going head to head with JJ Abrams.

To me, T’s answer was perfect! In fact, I ask him all sorts of weird things all the time and he has such thoroughly well-thought out answers that leave me swooning. The last being “Do you think beastiality is wrong?” *koffkoff* I’m weird like that, yes. But he said “Yes, why? Animals are basically like small children. It’s nauseating. It is like why teenagers can have sex with each other but an adult would be abusing their power.” I digress but… how is it possible that this man is not made just for me?

Just so you know, I’m all for Science Fiction and Fantasy. This movie resonates more than The Matrix and The Hunger Games but I do love them both too. The Science part in this is more plausible and dystopian societies are usually less appealing to me. (Don’t even let me start on the sparkling vampires. Lord of the Rings is in its own realm altogether.) It has its own weaknesses – don’t go looking for well-developed characters or an emotionally charged plot. Spock’s human side does prevail towards the end of the movie and there’s a little more about his relationship with Uhura, but that’s about it. But in all seriousness, who goes to a JJ Abrams directed Sci-Fi movie for those things? Right? Right???

Anyhoos, a GREAT MOVIE! Here’s why YOU should watch it:
1. The Stellar Cast
2. Plausibility
3. J J Abrams
4. 3D
5. Spock AND SPOCK

I give it 7.5/10.

Haha, no spoilers. One can play this game… GO CATCH IT IN 3D!!!

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS will hit cinemas in Singapore on 16 May 2013!

If you’ve watched it, feel free to come forward and discuss! Cute Spock, convincing/respectable or not? Sherlock Holmes is like an evil Captain America! How awesome is that? And men, nerds and Trekkies… What do you say to Zoe Saldana speaking Klingon? Hot or not?!
